Blue Rising

St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center Boise, ID
2007

Commissioned through SARMC and J.Crist Gallery

Blue Rising is a site specific permanent sculpture located in a traffic roundabout at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise Idaho. The goal of the work was to create an abstract, contemporary sculpture that would reflect the mission and history of the hospital. Historically the center has had a Catholic influence and although that is still present today it is no longer the focus of the hospital. A non-denominational yet spiritually uplifting work was desired. Coupled with the concept of healing body, mind and spirit; the work had to incorporate these varied ideas.

The form was inspired by studying drawings of Leonardo di Vinci’s Vitruvian man, the human form that is placed within a square, circle and triangle. This infamous icon was intended to show the proportions of the human body in relation to geometry and the inherent harmony between man, nature and the universe. I wanted the sculpture to relate to these notions as well as illustrate the modernity of medicine through the use of contemporary color and form.
